Team,
Recirculating an external blog. Though the blog is attacking team-chat software and is right in pointing out the "distraction in concentration" caused by chat, it is important to note that the problem is not the techology itself. Rather it is the way we use it. https://www.wrike.com/blog/instant-messaging-chat-app-killing-productivity/
Usage of chat - messengers, skype, hangouts, etc has made us "wait on real-time inputs/answers" to our work. This is an important aspect. However, what is not assimilated is that we "tend" to create a "wait" state by asking the questions / clarifications at the last minute. If the other party is "busy with scheduled" work, then our work is "pending" and therefore "delayed". Just imagine the plight of the person who receives such "urgent clarifications" from all of us all the time!! Phew - he / she doesn't get to do their "work" w/o interruptions.
It is here that we need an important shift in our "collaboration culture" - a move towards a more "responsible, accountable, planned collaboration".
